Shin Pain

Shin splints are the classic “too much, too soon” injury — and very treatable with the right plan.

About shin pain

Shin pain — often called shin splints — is common in runners and anyone ramping up their training. It typically reflects the lower leg being loaded faster than it can adapt, and the way your foot and leg move plays a big role.

Treatment & exercises

Treatment combines load management with rehabilitative exercise to build the capacity of the lower leg. Where foot biomechanics are contributing, orthotic therapy and footwear changes help reduce the stress on the shin so it can recover.

How Auckland Sports Podiatry can help

We assess your gait and training load, then guide you through the right exercises and load progression — supported by orthotic and footwear changes where they’ll reduce the stress running through your shin.

Every plan starts with finding the true cause of your pain. From there we may combine orthotic therapy, footwear advice, strengthening and stretching, strapping or bracing, gait changes and activity modification — whatever gets you moving comfortably again.
